Smoking arraignments; as in tracking Smoke

Postby JD13x » Tue Feb 09, 2016 10:17 pm

What does everyone do for tracking smoke?
Last time I did any smoke delays it was about 10-12 years ago.
It was a standard 40/40 smoke mix using 400 um AP.
This time around; I'm using 43% AP , 37% Zn 2.2% Ammonia Chloride.

Now I need to figure out the best way to cast them leaving enough room for propellant cap.

AP- 39% 200 um
Zink- 39%
R-45-19%
E-744--2.8%

Burns so well it leaves a smoke trail on the way up. :D

Smoke is pretty trivial, just the 40/40 mix we know and love.

Regarding the propellant cap...I never really saw the need for this. I understand that the propellant's signature may be "washed out" during the boost without it, but it's just a matter of preference. I'd rather have that space be occupied by more smoke charge so that the trail lasts longer.

Replacing the slow burning smoke formula with a web thickness of matching propellant will probably only remove a second or two of smoke, so even that is negligible...just not worth the difficulty to me!

R45 (EW 1282) 16.3%
Papi 1.8%
1 drop silicon oil per 500 gr
Zinc (dry :) ) 44.8%
AP400 36.6%

I ended up with:
43.5% 400 um AP
34.5% Zinc Dust
2.2% Ammonia Chloride
15.1 R45M
2.6% DOA
0.3% Tepanol
1.7% Papi

and a few drops of silicone oil.

Almost pourable.
It was really gooey.
